What is it?
A Permaculture Design Certificate Course (PDC) is a standardized training program that introduces participants to the principles, ethics, and practical design methods of permaculture—a system of ecological design for sustainable living, food production, and community development.
Core Elements of a PDC:
- Duration: Minimum of 72 hours of coursework (most courses are 10–14 days intensive or spread over weekends/months).
- Curriculum: Based on Bill Mollison and David Holmgren's original permaculture teachings, covering:
- Permaculture ethics and principles
- Design methodology and processes
- Climate, water, soil, and landscape systems
- Food forests, gardens, animals, buildings, and energy systems
- Social permaculture and invisible structures (e.g., economics, governance)
- Outcome: On completion, participants receive an internationally recognized Permaculture Design Certificate.
Why is a PDC valuable?
- It's the entry point to becoming a certified permaculture practitioner or designer.
- It equips you with tools to design regenerative systems at any scale (from backyard to broadacre).
- It's often a prerequisite for teaching permaculture or taking advanced permaculture courses (e.g., teacher training, diploma in permaculture).
